5. In this chapter, things related to the selection of clothes have been discussed. There has been diversity in the textile industry due to man-made fibres, mixed and all types of natural fibres. The condition of superiority related to nature, type and class of cloth etc. is called quality.

The external appearance, durability, comfort, texture and finish are affected by the quality of the fabric. Desirable and undesirable properties are found in cotton, silk, woolen, nylon, terylene/dacron etc. fabrics. 

The purpose of buying clothes is that it should look good on the body, what kind of clothes should have minimum expenditure and permanent benefits. Special clothes should be required according to the weather. At the beginning of the season you will get fresh and different types of clothes.

Q. 1. How will you choose clothes for yourself from clothes of different quality?

Ans. (i) Quality: Today different levels of clothes are available in the market and we have to choose from different levels of clothes as per our need.

(ii) Durability: The cloth is considered to be of good quality which is strong and long lasting. Therefore, while purchasing cloth, it is very important to keep in mind its durability. The durability of a cloth depends on many things, like which fiber it is made of: cotton, linen, silk, wool, terylene, nylon, orlon, dacron etc. Is its texture thin or dense? Is its finish permanent or temporary, is the color of the cloth raw or solid.

(iii) Ability to absorb sweat – Only that cloth which can easily absorb sweat is considered to be of good quality because the cloth which does not absorb sweat causes restlessness in the person. Where cotton clothes absorb sweat easily, clothes made of artificial fibers cannot absorb sweat. Clothes made of mixed fibers are not only strong but also absorb sweat easily, hence are considered of good quality.

(iv) Easy to wash – Good quality clothes are easy to wash. Clothes that are difficult to wash require more expense to maintain them after purchase. Many times, out of ignorance, we buy such clothes which we cannot wash at home and getting them dry cleaned from outside etc. leads to higher expenses.

(v) Color fastness – It is also necessary for the color of the cloth to be firm. Often the color of cheap clothes of poor quality is not stable and they become unwearable even after one or two washes. On the contrary, solid colored clothes remain attractive for a longer period of time. Even if solid colored clothes are a bit expensive, the extra money spent on them does not go waste. Therefore, it is not always wise to choose cheap clothes.

(vi) Different types of finishes – Often shopkeepers boast about the quality of their clothes and nowadays clothes with different types of finishes are available in the market. Some good companies do many types of finishing to enhance the quality of the clothes but some companies do not do much finishing.

Ans, Things to keep in mind before purchasing clothes: (i) What is the purpose of the clothes to be purchased? Is the garment suitable for the purpose? Does it fulfill the need for the purpose for which the clothes are being purchased?

(ii) Is this cloth suitable for any other purpose other than this one? 

(iii) Will this cloth last for some time in terms of quality and durability or will it tear soon?

(iv) Will the color of the clothes become lighter after washing?

(v) Will this cloth shrink? 

(vi) How is the structure of the cloth?

(vii) Is the maintenance of the clothes easy or not?

(viii) Is it of reasonable cost? Is it possible that by paying higher prices we are buying imitations?

(ix) Is it suitable for this season? Will this clothing keep you warm in summer and cool in winter?

Q.3. What things should be paid special attention to while purchasing clothes?

Ans. Points to be considered while purchasing fabrics: To ensure that no person gets irritated while purchasing clothes, he should keep the following things in mind – 

(1) Buying of fabrics from a reliable & good textile mill – to make clothes on a day-to-day basis.

The number of small and big mills is increasing rapidly due to which there is competition among them. In an effort to sell as much of their goods as possible, the mills bring low quality textiles to the market at low prices. The buyer should be careful about this.

(2) Buying of fabrics from a reliable shop – Clothes should always be bought from a reliable shop only so that there is no possibility of being cheated.

(3) To have complete knowledge of variety of clothes when intended to buy from sales – Many times there are very low quality clothes in the sale, Therefore, to buy clothes from SAIL, complete information about the varieties of clothes is necessary.

(4) Check the stamp of the mill on the cloth (Check the stamp of the mill before buying) – Every meter of the cloth is stamped and at the beginning of the lot, details of other characteristics of the cloth like percentage of composition etc. are also given. It is given. Before buying clothes, special attention should be paid to all these things. 

(5) Inspecting the stitching, size etc. in readymade clothes – While buying ready-made clothes, special care should be taken about the stitching of the clothes. It may happen that they unravel too soon or the threads used for stitching are raw.
