Chapter 15 | Polymers

1. Large molecules of high molecular mass are called polymers. These are formed by the union of monomers by covalent bonds,

The process is known as polymerization.

2. Poymers are classified on the basis of

(a) source (natural, semisynthetic and synthetic)

(b) structure (linear, branched and cross-linked)

(c) mode of polymerization (addition and condensation)

(d) molecular thermoplastics, thermosetting polymers). forces (elastomers, fibres,

3. Addition or chain growth polymerization occurs by forming either free radicals to ionic species.

4. Condensation polymerization or step-growth polymerization takes place with the elimination of simple molecules like water, alcohol etc.

5.

Polymers (Type)Monomers
(a) Polythene (addition) Ethene
(b) Polypropene (addition)Propene
(c)Polystyrene (addition)Styrene
(d) Polyvinylchloride (addition) Vinyl chloride
(e) Polytetrafluoroethene or Teflon (addition)Tetrafluoroethene
(g) Nylon-6 (condensation)Hexamethylene diamine;adipic acid
(h) Terylene or dacron (condensation)Ethylene glycol; terephthalic acid
(i) Natural rubber (addition) Isoprene (1, 3-butadiene)
(j) Neoprene (addition)Chloroprene (2-chloro-1, 3-butadiene)
(k) PHBV (condensation)3-hydroxy butanoic acid and 3-hydroxy pentanoic acid
(l) Bakelite (condensation)Phenol and formaldehyde polymers

6. Vulcanization is the process of heating natural rubber with sulphur to develop specific qualities such as abrasion resistance, heat resistance and elasticity.

7. Biodegradable polymers are those which can be broken into simpler ones—substances either by themselves or by microorganisms. PHBV is one such polymer. These are environment-friendly.
