Chapter 6 | Process of Isolation of Elements


1. Metallurgy is the complete process of extraction of a pure metal from its ore. It involves various steps: concentration, roasting/calcination, reduction, refining, etc.

2. Minerals are the naturally occurring substances of metals present in the earth’s crust. 

3. Ores are minerals from which a metal can be extracted profitably and conveniently.

4. Main methods of concentration of ore are hydraulic washing, magnetic separation, froth floatation and chemical separation (leaching). 

5. Roasting is carried out in the presence of excess air while calcination in the absence or limited supply of air.

6. Relative reducing powers of different metals can be compared in terms of the Ellingham diagram.

7. Pyrometallurgy is the process of reducing a metal oxide with coke or some other reducing agent upon heating. 

8. Hydrometallurgy involves the isolation of metal present in the soluble complex by a more reactive metal.

9. Cryolite or fluorspar reduces the melting point of alumina and increases its conductivity during the extraction of aluminium metal.

10. Carbon monoxide is the reducing agent for reducing haematite to iron metal. 

11. van Arkel method is used to refine metals with high purity required for space technology. 

12. Flux is an additional substance added to ore during a reduction in order to remove impurities (gangue). It combines with the impurities to form molten slag.

13. Low-grade copper ores are leached by using acid or bacteria.

14. Chromatography is a technique used to separate the components of a mixture by using the phenomenon of adsorption. 15. Impure iron, pig iron contains Mn, Si, P, S, C, etc., as impurities that are oxidised by the process of oxidative refining to form the purest wrought iron.

Question 1. Name the ore that can be concentrated by the magnetic separation method. Magnetic ores (iron ores) are generally separated by this method.

Solution. Magnetite (FeO3), haematite (FeO3), and siderite (FeCO₂) are such ores. Magnetic separation is used for the concentration of those ores which have one component of magnetic nature (either ore or the gangue). 

Question 2. What is the significance of leaching in the extraction of aluminium? 

Solution. This method removes the impurities of SiO2, Fe2O3, TiO2 etc.

from the bauxite ore by various chemical reactions stepwise either in the precipitate form or soluble form.

Question 3. The reaction, Cr₂O3(s)+2AI(s) →→→→ Al₂O3+2 Cr, (∆G°=-421 kJ) is thermodynamically feasible as is apparent from the Gibbs energy value. Why does it not take place at room temperature?

Solution. The reactants are solids so they cannot react in the present state. When the temperature is elevated, reactants melt and the reaction proceeds. Therefore, a higher temperature than room temperature is required.

Question 4. Is it true that under certain conditions, Mg can reduce Al2O3 and Al can reduce MgO? What are those conditions? Consider the Ellingham diagram for Al and Mg, to find the conditions in which they act as reducing agents.

Solution. If we look at the Ellingham diagram, we observe that the plots for Al and Mg cross each other at 1350°C (1623 K). Below this temperature Mg can reduce and above this temperature, Al can reduce MgO.
