A poster is a card or placard carrying announcements, advertisement invitations etc. put up in a public place. A good poster at once catches the attention of the passerby. It can be used to promote a product, event, or sentiment (such as patriotism), or to create awareness about some social evil (such as dowry, pollution. drug addiction, etc.).

A good poster attracts by its striking design and ornate artwork. The industrial boom of the early 20th century gave rise to advertising posters for virtually every conceivable product and event. But the onslaught of radio and television and an almost complete reliance on photography in advertising has brought about an eclipse in the art of poster designing and writing.

Posters are notices, advertisements and invitations all in one. Therefore, they should be drafted with utmost care. The people generally read them from a distance and so, as far as possible, the letters in a poster must be big.

They may be in the form of large notices generally put up on walls or notice boards. Colourful, attractive and tempting posters attract the attention of a large number of people, fire their imagination and influence their minds. Cinema posters and posters of political parties generally cover up the city walls adding to colour and life in big cities. There need not be many details in a poster. Only very important issue/ issues should be highlighted in it.

HINTS FOR DESIGNING A POSTER

1. As stated above, posters are notices, advertisements and invitations- all in one. Hence, good posters recapture and recreate the basic moods and styles of all these means of communication.

2. A poster should be so designed as can be put up in a public place. A good poster must catch the attention of passers-by.

3. Striking designs and ornate work are two important features of good posters.

4. As posters are generally put up in public places, people generally read them from a distance. So, as far as possible, the letters used in the posters must be bigger than other such writings. The use of bold or capital letters is frequently done.

5. There need not be many details in a poster. Only important issue/issues should be highlighted through catchy phrases, slogans or tempting and inviting language.
